Evak Hippo range

The Evak Hippo range is a family of cast iron submersible sewage pumps with a recessed vortex impeller — built for raw sewage, soiled wastewater and heavy rainwater in domestic, commercial and pump-station duty. Three series, sized by outlet and free passage: Hippo 50 (2″ threaded, 50 mm solids), Hippo 65 (DN65 flanged, 65 mm) and Hippo 80 (DN80 flanged, 76 mm). Motors from 0.37 kW to 4.1 kW, flows to 1,350 L/min and heads to 22.5 m.

Every Hippo shares the same build: FC200 cast iron volute, stainless steel motor housing, EKK Eagle Burgmann double mechanical seal in an oil bath, Class F motor with auto-reset thermal protection, IP68 to 10 m submersion, and 10 m of H07RN-F cable. The 50 series is a free-standing pump for sumps, chambers and portable use; the 65 and 80 are pump-station pumps with a flanged discharge.

Which series? Pick the 50 for a free-standing pump on a hose or riser. Pick the 65 or 80 for a pump station: the 65 where the rising main is long or high, the 80 where blockages or volume are the problem. Single-phase models can be supplied with a float switch; three-phase models are manual for panel control.

What is a submersible pump?

A submersible pump is designed to operate fully submerged in the liquid it is moving. The motor is sealed inside the pump body and cooled by the surrounding water. Submersibles are used for drainage, sewage, septic tanks, deep wells and boreholes, and for raising water from sumps, cellars and floodwater. Many stocked at Anglian Pumping handle solids in suspension.

Can submersible pumps handle solids and sewage?

Yes – some submersibles are designed for clean water only, others handle solids up to 50 mm or full raw sewage. Anglian Pumping stocks ABS, BBC, Flygt and T-T Submersibles ranges that include vortex, single channel and grinder impellers for different solids handling requirements. Always match the pump to the maximum solid size and the type of effluent it will see.

When should I use a submersible pump instead of a surface pump?

Use a submersible when the water level is more than around 8 metres below the pump installation point – surface pumps cannot self-prime beyond that depth. Submersibles are also better when the liquid contains solids, when noise must be minimised, or when the pump needs to operate in confined spaces such as sumps and chambers where a surface pump would not fit.
