The Grundfos SQE 3-120 (93001424) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible borehole pump for very deep domestic private water supplies, farms and irrigation. It delivers 3 m³/h (50 litres/min) at 125 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. Its 1.85 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor has dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection built in. Pair it with a Grundfos CU 301 and it holds a constant pressure at the taps. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQE 3-120 overview

The SQE 3-120 is the 9-stage model at the top of the Grundfos SQE 3 family. It runs on the 1.85 kW motor, the largest in the SQE range. It delivers 3 m³/h, a typical family-home flow, from boreholes where the pumping water level sits around 85–95 m down. It also suits sites where deep water has to climb a long way to a house, farm or header tank. Typical jobs are very deep private water supplies in hard-rock and upland areas, farms, holiday lets and irrigation.

It is a variable-speed pump. On its own it runs like a standard fixed-speed SQ. Add a CU 301 control unit and it becomes a constant-pressure system: the pump speeds up and slows down to hold the pressure you set. It talks to the CU 301 over its existing power cable, and any faults show on the CU 301 display.

Head is the total lift the pump must provide: the depth to the pumping water level, plus the height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want (about 10 m per bar). The full performance curve is on the Grundfos data sheet in the Downloads section.

Worked example: take a pumping water level of 87 m, add an 8 m rise to the plant room, about 5 m of pipe losses and a 2.5 bar (25 m) CU 301 set point. That gives 125 m, which puts the SQE 3-120 on its rated point at about 3 m³/h. If your water level is shallower, the SQE 3-105 may be enough. If you can accept a lower flow from deeper still, look at the SQE 2-130.

Key features

Constant pressure with CU 301

Set the pressure on the CU 301 and the SQE varies its speed to hold it as taps open and close. You get steady showers, fewer starts and stops, and can use a smaller pressure vessel.

No extra cables

The SQE and CU 301 communicate over the pump’s own power cable, so no signal wire goes down the borehole. Faults and alarms show on the CU 301 display.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It cuts out if the borehole runs dry and restarts automatically once the water recovers, protecting both the pump and the borehole.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V before it can burn out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate up to 50 g/m³ of sand. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the top of the pump.

Stainless steel construction

The pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel, with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable. Grundfos SQ/SQE motors don’t take 4-core. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
At 12.3 A on a deep setting, cable size is critical. An undersized cable causes voltage drop and nuisance cut-outs, so we’ll confirm the right cross-section for your depth.
For constant pressure, fit the CU 301 with its pressure sensor and a small diaphragm pressure vessel on the surface pipework.
The pump is rated for up to 15 bar operating pressure. Use rising main and fittings rated for the pressure at your setting.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 3-120 pump?

Its rated point is 3 m³/h (50 litres/min) at 125 m of total head. It gives more flow at lower heads, and the full curve is on the Grundfos data sheet in the Downloads section.

What’s the difference between an SQE and an SQ?

Both use the same style of 3″ stainless pump end. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor, so with a CU 301 it gives constant pressure. The SQ is fixed-speed and runs from a pressure switch.

Do I need a CU 301?

Only if you want constant pressure. Without one, the SQE runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ. With a CU 301, you set the pressure on the control unit (2–5 bar, in 0.5 bar steps) and the pump adjusts its speed to hold it.

Will the SQE 3-120 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole or liner has an internal diameter of at least 76 mm (3″). It fits comfortably in standard 4″, 5″ and 6″ domestic boreholes.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself and restarts automatically once the water recovers. With a CU 301 fitted, the dry-running alarm also shows on its display.

What cable does it need?

It needs 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. At this current and depth, cable size is critical, so we’ll confirm it for your run length.
