Full Description

The Evak Hippo 50-50 (230V) is the entry-point in the Hippo range, built for standard UK domestic and light-commercial mains supply. A 0.37 kW / 0.5 HP 2-pole single-phase motor drives a vortex impeller through a heat-treated stainless steel shaft, supported by NTN long-life ball bearings.

The 50 mm full free passage vortex impeller is designed to handle raw sewage and heavy solids without clogging — a genuine step up from the 35–40 mm free passage typical of comparable-sized pumps. Combined with the EN-GJL-200 cast iron pump volute, this makes the Hippo 50-50 the workhorse choice for domestic sewage pits, small sewage stations, and permanent basement sump installations where reliability under real-world sewage conditions matters more than headline flow figures.

The motor housing is AISI 304 stainless steel with a PA66+30GF glass-reinforced nylon motor cover — the cover material used across the 0.5–1 HP Hippo range for reduced weight without compromising strength. Twin EKK Eagle Burgmann mechanical seals (upper Ca/Ce, lower SiC/SiC) run in an oil chamber with an NBR lip seal. Klixon auto-cut thermal protection safeguards the motor. Supplied as automatic with float switch, or manual for use with external level controllers.

EN-GJL-200 cast iron pump casing, impeller, oil chamber, bracket, and seal housing — heavy-duty grey iron for long service life in abrasive conditions.

Stainless motor housing

AISI 304 stainless steel motor housing over the stator, with AISI 410 heat-treated stainless shaft. Nylon 6 handle, PA66+30GF glass-reinforced nylon motor cover.

50 mm vortex impeller

Recessed vortex design giving full 50 mm free passage — handles typical sewage solids and stringy material without clogging.

Twin silicon carbide seal

Next day delivery:
Next working day delivery is available for a £16.50 + VAT delivery charge.

What is a submersible pump?

A submersible pump is designed to operate fully submerged in the liquid it is moving. The motor is sealed inside the pump body and cooled by the surrounding water. Submersibles are used for drainage, sewage, septic tanks, deep wells and boreholes, and for raising water from sumps, cellars and floodwater. Many stocked at Anglian Pumping handle solids in suspension.

Can submersible pumps handle solids and sewage?

Yes – some submersibles are designed for clean water only, others handle solids up to 50 mm or full raw sewage. Anglian Pumping stocks ABS, BBC, Flygt and T-T Submersibles ranges that include vortex, single channel and grinder impellers for different solids handling requirements. Always match the pump to the maximum solid size and the type of effluent it will see.

When should I use a submersible pump instead of a surface pump?

Use a submersible when the water level is more than around 8 metres below the pump installation point – surface pumps cannot self-prime beyond that depth. Submersibles are also better when the liquid contains solids, when noise must be minimised, or when the pump needs to operate in confined spaces such as sumps and chambers where a surface pump would not fit.
