The Grundfos SQ 5-70 (96510217) is a 3″ stainless steel submersible borehole pump for larger homes, smallholdings and irrigation that need high flow from deep water. It delivers 5 m³/h (about 83 litres/min) at 73 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 1.85 kW MS3 permanent-magnet motor has built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection, and the pump fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQ 5-70 overview

The SQ 5-70 is the 6-stage top model of the Grundfos SQ 5 family. It uses the largest 1.85 kW MS3 motor and has an Rp 1½ outlet, with up to 106 m of head. It delivers 5 m³/h at full house pressure from boreholes where the pumping water level sits around 40–50 m down. Typical jobs are larger homes with several bathrooms, smallholdings, stables, holiday-let sites and properties running irrigation alongside the house supply.

Like every SQ, it has the electronics inside the motor. There is no capacitor box or starter, and dry-running, overload, overtemperature and voltage protection are all built in. Wire it to a 230V supply through a pressure switch and pressure vessel, or use an automatic flow controller, and it’s ready to run.

Performance

Head is the total lift the pump must provide: depth to the pumping water level, plus height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want, at about 10 m per bar.

Worked example: pumping water level 42 m, plus a 6 m rise to the plant room, plus about 5 m of pipe losses, plus 2 bar (20 m) at the vessel, gives 73 m. That puts the SQ 5-70 on its rated point at about 5 m³/h. If your water level is shallower, the SQ 5-60 may be enough on the smaller motor. For 5 m³/h from deeper still, ask us about a 4″ Grundfos SP.

Key features

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It allows 40 seconds after switch-on for priming, cuts out if the borehole runs dry, then restarts itself within 5 minutes once water has recovered.

Soft start

A smooth ramp-up of about 2 seconds keeps start current low, reduces water hammer and wear, and lets the pump run from a generator. Grundfos recommends sizing the generator 50% above the pump’s power.

Wide voltage tolerance

Over- and under-voltage protection keeps the motor safe on weak rural supplies and long cable runs. It stops below 150V or above 315V instead of burning out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate sand up to 50 g/m³. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the pump top.

Stainless steel construction

Pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Overload and overtemperature

The electronics protect against motor overload, high internal temperature and upthrust at start-up, with no external control box needed.

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable. Grundfos SQ/SQE motors do not take a 4-core cable. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
At 12.3 A, cable size matters. Undersized cable means voltage drop and nuisance cut-outs. Ask us and we’ll confirm the cross-section for your depth.
Use 1½” rising main to match the outlet and keep friction losses down at this flow rate.
The column can hold up to 10.6 bar against a closed valve, so use rising main, fittings and a pressure vessel rated for it, or fit a pressure relief valve.

Want constant pressure at the taps? The Grundfos SQE 5-70 (96510168) uses the same pump end with an MSE3 motor. Add a CU 301 constant pressure package and it varies speed to hold steady pressure instead of cycling on and off.

How much water does the Grundfos SQ 5-70 pump?

About 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 73 m of total head, and up to 100 litres/min at 58 m. It stops delivering at 106 m.

What’s the difference between the SQ 5-60 and SQ 5-70?

The SQ 5-70 adds a sixth stage and moves up from the 1.55 kW to the 1.85 kW motor. That gives about 17 m more head (106 m max against 89 m) for deeper boreholes. Both fit the same 76 mm bore.

Does it need a control box?

No. Soft start, dry-running, voltage, overload and overtemperature protection are built into the motor. A pressure switch with vessel, or a flow controller, is all that’s needed to run it automatically.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQ senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself, and tries again automatically within 5 minutes. That protects both the pump and the borehole.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. At this current the cable size matters, so we’ll confirm it for your run length.

Can it run from a generator?

Yes. The soft start keeps start current low. Grundfos recommends a generator rated at least 50% above the pump’s power input, so around 4 kVA or more for the SQ 5-70.
