The Grundfos SQ 1-35 (96510178) is a 3″ stainless steel submersible borehole pump for low-yield private water supplies, wells and small irrigation. It delivers 1 m³/h (about 17 litres/min) at 34 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 0.7 kW MS3 permanent-magnet motor has built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection, and the pump fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQ 1-35 overview

The SQ 1-35 is the smallest model in the Grundfos SQ 1 family, a 2-stage pump built for boreholes and wells where yield is low and the water level is fairly shallow. It is a common choice for a single property on a private water supply, a holiday let, a stable block or a garden irrigation borehole. In these jobs a steady 15–17 litres a minute is all that’s needed, and protecting the borehole from over-pumping matters more than outright flow.

Like every SQ, it runs on Grundfos’ MS3 permanent-magnet motor with the electronics inside the motor. There is no capacitor box or starter, and dry-running, overload, overtemperature and voltage protection are all built in. Wire it to a 230V supply through a pressure switch and pressure vessel, or use an automatic flow controller, and it’s ready to run.

Head is the total lift the pump must provide: depth to the pumping water level, plus height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want, at about 10 m per bar.

Worked example: pumping water level 10 m, plus a 2 m rise to the plant room, plus about 2 m of pipe losses, plus 2 bar (20 m) at the vessel, gives 34 m. That puts the SQ 1-35 right on its rated point at about 1 m³/h. If your water level is much deeper, step up to the SQ 1-50 or SQ 1-65.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It allows 40 seconds after switch-on for priming, cuts out if the borehole runs dry, then restarts itself within 5 minutes once water has recovered.

Soft start

A smooth ramp-up of about 2 seconds keeps start current low, reduces water hammer and wear, and lets the pump run from a small generator. Grundfos recommends sizing the generator 50% above the pump’s power.

Wide voltage tolerance

Over- and under-voltage protection keeps the motor safe on weak rural supplies and long cable runs. It stops below 150V or above 315V instead of burning out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate sand up to 50 g/m³. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the pump top.

Stainless steel construction

Pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Overload and overtemperature

The electronics protect against motor overload, high internal temperature and upthrust at start-up, with no external control box needed.

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable. Grundfos SQ/SQE motors do not take a 4-core cable. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
Size the cable to the run length and keep voltage drop low. Ask us and we’ll confirm the cross-section for your depth.
Water must flow past the motor to cool it. In wide wells or tanks, fit a cooling sleeve.
For a typical house supply, pair it with a pressure switch and pressure vessel or a flow controller on the surface.

Want constant pressure at the taps? The Grundfos SQE 1-35 (96510071) uses the same pump end with an MSE3 motor. Add a CU 301 constant pressure package and it varies speed to hold steady pressure instead of cycling on and off.

How much water does the Grundfos SQ 1-35 pump?

About 1 m³/h (16.7 litres/min) at 34 m of total head, rising to around 25 litres/min at 20 m. It stops delivering at 47 m.

Will the SQ 1-35 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole or liner has an internal diameter of at least 76 mm (3″). It fits comfortably in standard 4″, 5″ and 6″ domestic boreholes.

Does it need a control box?

No. Soft start, dry-running, voltage, overload and overtemperature protection are built into the motor. A pressure switch with vessel, or a flow controller, is all that’s needed to run it automatically.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQ senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself, and tries again automatically within 5 minutes. That protects both the pump and a low-yield borehole.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. The cable size depends on the run length.

Can it run from a generator?

Yes. The soft start keeps start current low. Grundfos recommends a generator rated at least 50% above the pump’s power input, so around 1.5 kVA or more for the SQ 1-35.
