The Grundfos SQ 5-25 (96510212) is a 3″ stainless steel submersible pump for high-flow jobs from shallow wells and boreholes. Typical uses are irrigation, filling storage tanks, feeding a surface booster set, and supplying a property at modest pressure. It delivers 5 m³/h (about 83 litres/min) at 23 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 0.7 kW MS3 permanent-magnet motor has built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection, and the pump fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQ 5-25 overview

The SQ 5-25 is the 2-stage model in the Grundfos SQ 5 family, rated at 5 m³/h with an Rp 1½ outlet. It pairs high flow with enough lift for shallow boreholes and wells where the water sits within a few metres of the surface. That makes it a strong fit for garden, paddock and smallholding irrigation, filling storage and break tanks quickly, and feeding a surface booster set. It can also supply a property directly at modest pressure when the water level is shallow.

Like every SQ, it runs on Grundfos’ MS3 permanent-magnet motor with the electronics inside the motor. There is no capacitor box or starter, and dry-running, overload, overtemperature and voltage protection are all built in. Wire it to a 230V supply through a pressure switch and pressure vessel, a float switch or a flow controller, and it’s ready to run.

Head is the total lift the pump must provide: depth to the pumping water level, plus height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus any pressure you want, at about 10 m per bar.

Worked example: pumping water level 6 m, plus a 2 m rise to the outlet, plus about 3 m of pipe losses, plus 1.2 bar (12 m) at the sprinklers, gives 23 m. That puts the SQ 5-25 on its rated point at about 5 m³/h. For less lift, the SQ 5-15 may be enough. For deeper water or full house pressure, step up to the SQ 5-35.

Key features

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It allows 40 seconds after switch-on for priming, cuts out if the borehole runs dry, then restarts itself within 5 minutes once water has recovered.

Soft start

A smooth ramp-up of about 2 seconds keeps start current low, reduces water hammer and wear, and lets the pump run from a small generator. Grundfos recommends sizing the generator 50% above the pump’s power.

Wide voltage tolerance

Over- and under-voltage protection keeps the motor safe on weak rural supplies and long cable runs. It stops below 150V or above 315V instead of burning out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate sand up to 50 g/m³. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the pump top.

Stainless steel construction

Pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Overload and overtemperature

The electronics protect against motor overload, high internal temperature and upthrust at start-up, with no external control box needed.

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable. Grundfos SQ/SQE motors do not take a 4-core cable. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
Use 1½” rising main to match the outlet and keep friction losses down at this flow rate.
Water must flow past the motor to cool it. In wide wells, sumps or tanks, fit a cooling sleeve.
Check the borehole yield can sustain 5 m³/h. If the yield test is lower, an SQ 3 is a safer match.

Want constant pressure? The Grundfos SQE 5-25 (96510164) uses the same pump end with an MSE3 motor. Add a CU 301 constant pressure package and it varies speed to hold steady pressure instead of cycling on and off.

How much water does the Grundfos SQ 5-25 pump?

About 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 23 m of total head, and up to 100 litres/min at 18 m. It stops delivering at 36 m.

What’s the difference between the SQ 5-15 and SQ 5-25?

Both use the same 0.7 kW motor, Rp 1½ outlet and 76 mm borehole fit. The SQ 5-25 has a second stage, doubling the maximum head to 36 m (against 18 m), which gives useful pressure as well as flow.

Does it need a control box?

No. Soft start, dry-running, voltage, overload and overtemperature protection are built into the motor. A pressure switch with vessel, a float switch or a flow controller is all that’s needed to run it automatically.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQ senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself, and tries again automatically within 5 minutes. That protects both the pump and the borehole.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. The cable size depends on the run length.

Can it run from a generator?

Yes. The soft start keeps start current low. Grundfos recommends a generator rated at least 50% above the pump’s power input, so around 1.5 kVA or more for the SQ 5-25.
