The Grundfos SQE 5-25 (96510164) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible pump for high flow at moderate head. Use it for shallow boreholes and wells, irrigation, tank filling and water transfer. It delivers 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 23 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 0.7 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor has built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Constant pressure only with very shallow water. The CU 301’s lowest set point is 2 bar, which leaves this pump about 11 m for lift and pipe losses at 3 m³/h. For a pressurised house supply from a typical borehole, look at the SQE 5-35 or above. It comes with a 1.5 m motor lead, so you’ll need 3-core drop cable and a cable joint kit.

Grundfos SQE 5-25 overview

The SQE 5-25 is the 2-stage model in the Grundfos SQE 5 family. It moves a large volume of water over a moderate lift: 5 m³/h at 23 m, and up to 6 m³/h at lower heads. Use it when the water is fairly close to the surface and flow matters more than pressure. Typical jobs are shallow boreholes and wells, garden, paddock and market-garden irrigation, filling storage or header tanks, livestock troughs and water transfer.

It uses the same pump end as the SQ 5-25, fitted with Grundfos’ MSE3 variable-speed motor. On its own it runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ. With a CU 301 it can hold a set pressure, communicating over the existing power cable. The CU 301’s lowest set point is 2 bar (20 m) and this pump closes off at 36 m, so constant pressure only works where the water is very shallow.

These figures are at full speed. Head is the total lift the pump has to provide: the depth to the pumping water level, plus the height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus any pressure you need (about 10 m for each bar).

Worked example: irrigating from a shallow borehole. Take a pumping water level of 8 m, a 5 m rise across the site, about 4 m of pipe losses and 0.6 bar (6 m) at the sprinklers. That adds up to 23 m, and the SQE 5-25 delivers about 5 m³/h. If your lift is lower, the SQE 5-15 gives more flow for less power. For a house supply at 2–3 bar, step up to the SQE 5-35.

High flow at moderate head

Two large stages deliver up to 100 litres/min. That makes it ideal for irrigation, tank filling and transfer, where volume matters more than pressure.

Variable-speed motor

The MSE3 permanent-magnet motor talks to the Grundfos CU 300 / CU 301 over the power cable, so no signal wire goes down the borehole. Faults show on the control unit display.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It cuts out if the well runs dry and restarts automatically once the water recovers, which protects the pump on shallow, fast-drawing sources.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V before it can burn out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate up to 50 g/m³ of sand. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the top of the pump.

Stainless steel construction

The pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel, with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean water (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before you switch it on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable, because Grundfos SQ/SQE motors don’t take 4-core. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
Use 1½” pipework to match the Rp 1½ outlet. Smaller pipe adds friction losses that eat into the available head at this flow.
If you fit a CU 301, its lowest set point is 2 bar (20 m). With this pump closing off at 36 m, that leaves about 11 m for lift and pipe losses at 3 m³/h, and only 3 m at 5 m³/h.
At 5 m³/h it can draw a small or slow well down quickly, so check the yield first. The dry-running protection will stop it if the well empties.

Don’t need variable speed? The Grundfos SQ 5-25 (96510212) uses the same pump end with a fixed-speed MS3 motor and runs from a float switch, pressure switch or timer.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 5-25 pump?

At full speed it delivers about 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 23 m of total head, and up to 100 litres/min at 18 m. Delivery stops at 36 m.

What’s the difference between the SQE 5-25 and SQ 5-25?

They share the same pump end, performance and borehole fit. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor and works with the CU 301. The SQ is fixed-speed.

Can it supply my house at mains pressure?

Only where the water is very shallow. The CU 301’s minimum 2 bar set point uses 20 of its 23 m at full flow, leaving almost nothing for lift and pipe losses. For a pressurised house supply from a typical borehole, choose the SQE 5-35 or higher with a CU 301.

Will the SQE 5-25 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole, well or liner has an internal diameter of at least 76 mm (3″). It also fits in larger wells and sumps.

What happens if my well runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself and restarts automatically once the water recovers. If a CU 301 is fitted, the dry-running alarm also shows on its display.

What cable does it need?

It needs 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. At 5.2 A, 1.5 mm² is usually fine on short runs, and we’ll confirm the size for your length.
