The Grundfos SQE 3-30 (96510156) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible pump for shallow boreholes and wells, garden irrigation and well-to-tank transfer. It delivers 3 m³/h (50 litres/min) at 26 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 0.7 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor has dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection built in. Pair it with a Grundfos CU 301 and it holds a constant pressure. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQE 3-30 overview

The SQE 3-30 is the entry model in the Grundfos SQE 3 family, a 2-stage pump rated at 3 m³/h. The SQ(E) 3 is the most popular family for UK domestic private water supplies because it has enough flow to run several taps and a shower at once. This shallow-lift model suits boreholes and wells where the water sits within about 10 m of the surface. It also works well for garden irrigation, filling a storage tank from a well, and feeding a surface booster set.

It uses the same pump end as the SQ 3-30 with Grundfos’ MSE3 variable-speed motor. Run on its own, it behaves like a standard SQ. Connect a CU 301 control unit and it becomes a constant-pressure system. The pump speeds up and slows down to hold the pressure you set, communicates with the CU 301 over the existing power cable, and reports faults on the CU 301 display.

These figures are at full speed. Head is the total lift the pump must provide: depth to the pumping water level, plus height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want, at about 10 m per bar.

Worked example: pumping water level 4 m, plus a 1 m rise to the plant room, plus about 1 m of pipe losses, plus the CU 301’s minimum 2.0 bar (20 m) set point, gives 26 m. The SQE 3-30 holds that pressure at up to about 3 m³/h. With the water at 10 m, the same set point drops it to about 2 m³/h. For a house supply at a higher set pressure, or a deeper water level, step up to the SQE 3-40.

Key features

Constant pressure with CU 301

Set the pressure you want on the CU 301 and the SQE varies its speed to hold it as taps open and close. You get steady showers, fewer starts and stops, and a smaller pressure vessel.

No extra cables

The SQE and CU 301 communicate over the pump’s own power cable, so no signal wire goes down the borehole. Faults and alarms show on the CU 301 display.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It cuts out if the borehole runs dry and restarts automatically once water has recovered, which protects both pump and borehole.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V instead of burning out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate sand up to 50 g/m³. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the pump top.

Stainless steel construction

Pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable. Grundfos SQ/SQE motors do not take a 4-core cable. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
Size the cable to the run length and keep voltage drop low. Ask us and we’ll confirm the cross-section for your depth.
For constant pressure, fit the CU 301 with its pressure sensor and a small diaphragm pressure vessel on the surface pipework.
Check the borehole yield can sustain 3 m³/h. If the yield test is lower, an SQE 2 or SQE 1 is a safer match.

Don’t need constant pressure? The Grundfos SQ 3-30 (96510204) uses the same pump end with a fixed-speed MS3 motor and runs from a standard pressure switch and vessel.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 3-30 pump?

At full speed it delivers about 3 m³/h (50 litres/min) at 26 m of total head, and up to 58 litres/min at 22 m. It stops delivering at 36 m.

What’s the difference between the SQE 3-30 and SQ 3-30?

They have the same pump end, performance and borehole fit. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor, so with a CU 301 it gives constant pressure. The SQ is fixed-speed and runs from a pressure switch.

Is the SQE 3-30 suitable for a house supply?

Yes, if the water level is shallow. 3 m³/h covers most family homes, but with 36 m maximum head it suits boreholes and wells where the water sits within about 10 m of the surface. For deeper water or a higher set pressure, choose the SQE 3-40 or above.

Do I need a CU 301?

Only for constant pressure. Without one, the SQE runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ. With a CU 301, you set the pressure on the control unit (2–5 bar, in 0.5 bar steps) and the pump adjusts its speed to hold it.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself, and restarts automatically once the water recovers. With a CU 301 fitted, the dry-running alarm also shows on its display.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. The CU 301 uses the same cable to talk to the pump, so no extra wiring is needed.
