The Grundfos SQE 2-70 (96510152) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible borehole pump for domestic private water supplies, farms and irrigation where the water level is deep. It delivers 2 m³/h (about 33 litres/min) at 71 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 1.15 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor has built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection. Pair it with a Grundfos CU 301 and it holds a constant pressure at the taps. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQE 2-70 overview

The SQE 2-70 is the 4-stage model in the Grundfos SQE 2 family, and the first in the family to use the 1.15 kW motor. It delivers 2 m³/h, a typical family-home flow, from boreholes where the pumping water level sits around 35–45 m down, or where water has to climb to a house or tank on higher ground. Typical jobs are private water supplies to single homes, farms, stables, holiday lets and irrigation.

It uses the same pump end as the SQ 2-70, paired with Grundfos’ MSE3 variable-speed motor. On its own it behaves like a standard SQ. Connect a CU 301 control unit and it becomes a constant-pressure system. The pump then speeds up and slows down to hold the pressure you set, talks to the CU 301 over the existing power cable, and reports faults on the CU 301 display.

Figures are at full speed. Head is the total lift the pump must provide: depth to the pumping water level, plus height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want (about 10 m per bar).

Worked example: pumping water level 41 m, plus a 6 m rise to the plant room, plus about 4 m of pipe losses, plus a 2.0 bar (20 m) CU 301 set point, gives 71 m. The SQE 2-70 holds that pressure at up to about 2 m³/h. If your water level is shallower, the SQE 2-55 may be enough on the smaller motor. If it’s deeper, step up to the SQE 2-85.

Key features

Constant pressure with CU 301

Set the pressure you want on the CU 301 and the SQE varies its speed to hold it as taps open and close. You get steady showers, fewer starts and stops, and a smaller pressure vessel.

No extra cables

The SQE and CU 301 communicate over the pump’s own power cable, so no signal wire goes down the borehole. Faults and alarms show on the CU 301 display.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. If the borehole runs dry it cuts out, then restarts automatically once the water has recovered, protecting both pump and borehole.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V before it can burn out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate up to 50 g/m³ of sand. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the pump top.

Stainless steel construction

The pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable, because Grundfos SQ/SQE motors don’t take 4-core. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
The pump draws 8.4 A, so on a deep cable run size the cable carefully to keep voltage drop low. Ask us and we’ll confirm the cross-section for your depth.
For constant pressure, fit the CU 301 with its pressure sensor and a small diaphragm pressure vessel on the surface pipework.
Check the borehole yield can sustain 2 m³/h. Use rising main and fittings rated for the 8.9 bar closed-valve pressure.

Don’t need constant pressure? The Grundfos SQ 2-70 (96510200) uses the same pump end with a fixed-speed MS3 motor and runs from a standard pressure switch and vessel.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 2-70 pump?

At full speed it delivers about 2 m³/h (33 litres/min) at 71 m of total head, and up to 50 litres/min at 43 m. It stops delivering at 89 m.

What’s the difference between the SQE 2-70 and SQ 2-70?

They have the same pump end, performance and borehole fit. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor, so with a CU 301 it gives constant pressure. The SQ is fixed-speed and runs from a pressure switch.

Do I need a CU 301?

Only for constant pressure. Without one, the SQE runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ. With a CU 301, you set the pressure on the control unit (2–5 bar, in 0.5 bar steps) and the pump adjusts its speed to hold it.

Will the SQE 2-70 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole or liner has an internal diameter of at least 76 mm (3″). It fits comfortably in standard 4″, 5″ and 6″ domestic boreholes.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself, and restarts automatically once the water recovers. With a CU 301 fitted, the dry-running alarm also shows on its display.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) runs from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. The CU 301 uses the same cable to talk to the pump, so no extra wiring is needed.
