The Grundfos SQE 1-125 (96510146) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible borehole pump for very deep, low-yield private water supplies. It delivers 1 m³/h (about 17 litres/min) at 135 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 1.55 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor has built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection. Pair it with a Grundfos CU 301 and it holds a constant pressure at the taps. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQE 1-125 overview

The SQE 1-125 is the 8-stage model in the Grundfos SQE 1 family and the first to use the larger 1.55 kW motor, which takes maximum head up to 189 m. It’s built for low-yield boreholes where the pumping water level sits around 90–100 m down, or where water has to be lifted from depth and then pushed up steep ground to a property, farm or header tank. Typical jobs are very deep private water supplies in hard-rock and upland areas, remote homes, holiday lets and livestock supplies.

It uses the same pump end as the SQ 1-125 with Grundfos’ MSE3 variable-speed motor. Run on its own, it behaves like a standard SQ. Connect a CU 301 control unit and it becomes a constant-pressure system. The pump speeds up and slows down to hold the pressure you set. It talks to the CU 301 over the existing power cable, and faults show on the CU 301 display.

Figures are at full speed. Head is the total lift the pump has to provide: depth to the pumping water level, plus height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want (about 10 m per bar).

Worked example: a 92 m pumping water level, a 12 m rise to the plant room, about 6 m of pipe losses and a 2.5 bar (25 m) CU 301 set point add up to 135 m. The SQE 1-125 holds that pressure at up to about 1 m³/h. With a shallower water level, the SQE 1-110 may be enough on the smaller motor. If it’s deeper, step up to the SQE 1-140.

Key features

Constant pressure with CU 301

Set the pressure on the CU 301 and the SQE varies its speed to hold it as taps open and close. You get steady showers, fewer starts and stops, and can use a smaller pressure vessel.

No extra cables

The SQE and CU 301 communicate over the pump’s own power cable, so no signal wire goes down the borehole. Faults and alarms show on the CU 301 display.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. If the borehole runs dry it cuts out, then restarts automatically once the water has recovered, protecting both pump and borehole.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V instead of letting it burn out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate sand up to 50 g/m³. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the pump top.

Stainless steel construction

The pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, built for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable, as Grundfos SQ/SQE motors don’t take 4-core. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
At 11.2 A over a cable run of 100 m or more, cable size matters. Undersized cable causes voltage drop and nuisance cut-outs, so let us confirm the cross-section for your depth.
For constant pressure, fit the CU 301 with its pressure sensor and a small diaphragm pressure vessel on the surface pipework.
The column can reach 18.9 bar against a closed valve, so use rising main and fittings rated for that.

Don’t need constant pressure? The Grundfos SQ 1-125 (96510194) uses the same pump end with a fixed-speed MS3 motor and runs from a standard pressure switch and vessel.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 1-125 pump?

At full speed, about 1 m³/h (16.7 litres/min) at 135 m of total head, rising to around 25 litres/min at 93 m. It stops delivering at 189 m.

What’s the difference between the SQE 1-125 and SQ 1-125?

They have the same pump end, performance and borehole fit. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor, so with a CU 301 it gives constant pressure. The SQ is fixed-speed and runs from a pressure switch.

Do I need a CU 301?

Only for constant pressure. Without one, the SQE runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ. With a CU 301, you set the pressure on the control unit and the pump adjusts its speed to hold it.

Will the SQE 1-125 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole or liner is at least 76 mm (3″) internal diameter. It fits comfortably in standard 4″, 5″ and 6″ domestic boreholes.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there’s no water, stops itself, and restarts automatically once the water recovers. With a CU 301 fitted, the dry-running alarm also shows on its display.

What cable does it need?

3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. At this current and depth the cable size matters, so we’ll confirm it for your run length.
