The Grundfos SQE 5-35 (96510165) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible borehole pump. It suits higher-flow domestic private water supplies, larger homes, farms and irrigation from shallow to medium-depth boreholes. It delivers 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 36 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply. The 1.15 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor has dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection built in. Pair it with a Grundfos CU 301 and it holds a constant pressure at the taps. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Grundfos SQE 5-35 overview

The SQE 5-35 is the 3-stage model in the Grundfos SQE 5 family, running on the 1.15 kW motor. It delivers 5 m³/h, enough for a larger home running several outlets at once. It suits boreholes where the pumping water level is around 5–12 m down. Typical uses are higher-demand private water supplies, homes with annexes or holiday lets, smallholdings, livestock and irrigation.

It uses the same pump end as the SQ 5-35, fitted with Grundfos’ MSE3 variable-speed motor. On its own it runs like a standard SQ. Add a CU 301 control unit and it becomes a constant-pressure system: the pump speeds up and slows down to hold the pressure you set. It talks to the CU 301 over the existing power cable, and faults show on the CU 301 display.

These figures are at full speed. Head is the total lift the pump has to provide: the depth to the pumping water level, plus the height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus the pressure you want (about 10 m for each bar).

Worked example: start with a pumping water level of 8 m. Add a 4 m rise to the plant room, about 4 m of pipe losses and a 2.0 bar (20 m) CU 301 set point. That gives 36 m, and the SQE 5-35 holds that pressure at up to about 5 m³/h. If your water is shallower and you don’t need house pressure, the SQE 5-25 gives 5 m³/h at 23 m. If it’s deeper, step up to the SQE 5-50.

Constant pressure with CU 301

Set the pressure on the CU 301 and the SQE varies its speed to hold it as taps open and close. You get steady showers, fewer starts and stops, and can use a smaller pressure vessel.

No extra cables

The SQE and CU 301 communicate over the pump’s own power cable, so no signal wire goes down the borehole. Faults and alarms show on the CU 301 display.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It cuts out if the borehole runs dry and restarts automatically once the water recovers, which protects both the pump and the borehole.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps the start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V before it can burn out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate up to 50 g/m³ of sand. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the top of the pump.

Stainless steel construction

The pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel, with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean groundwater (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before you switch it on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable, because Grundfos SQ/SQE motors don’t take 4-core. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
At 8.4 A, cable size matters on longer runs. Undersized cable causes voltage drop and nuisance cut-outs, so we can confirm the right cross-section for your setting depth and run to the house.
For constant pressure, fit the CU 301 with its pressure sensor and a small diaphragm pressure vessel on the surface pipework. Use 1½” pipe to match the outlet.
5 m³/h is a high draw for a domestic borehole. Check the yield from your drilling or test-pump records so the water level stays above the pump.

Don’t need constant pressure? The Grundfos SQ 5-35 (96510213) uses the same pump end with a fixed-speed MS3 motor and runs from a standard pressure switch and vessel.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 5-35 pump?

At full speed it delivers about 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 36 m of total head, and up to 100 litres/min at 28 m. Delivery stops at 54 m.

What’s the difference between the SQE 5-35 and SQ 5-35?

They have the same pump end, performance and borehole fit. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor, so with a CU 301 it gives constant pressure. The SQ is fixed-speed and runs from a pressure switch.

Do I need a CU 301?

Only if you want constant pressure. Without one, the SQE runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ. With a CU 301, you set the pressure on the control unit and the pump adjusts its speed to hold it.

Will the SQE 5-35 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole or liner has an internal diameter of at least 76 mm (3″). It fits comfortably in standard 4″, 5″ and 6″ domestic boreholes.

What happens if my borehole runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself and restarts automatically once the water recovers. If a CU 301 is fitted, the dry-running alarm also shows on its display.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. At 8.4 A the size depends on the run length, and we’ll confirm it for your installation.
