The Grundfos SQE 5-15 (96510163) is a 3″ stainless steel variable-speed submersible pump built for high flow at low head. It suits shallow wells and boreholes, irrigation, tank filling and water transfer. It delivers 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 11 m head from a standard 230V single-phase supply, using a 0.7 kW MSE3 permanent-magnet motor with built-in dry-running protection, soft start and voltage protection. It fits any borehole from 76 mm (3″) upwards.

Not for constant pressure. It closes off at 1.8 bar, below the CU 301’s 2 bar minimum set point, so it can’t be used as a CU 301 constant-pressure pump. Run it from a float switch, pressure switch or timer. For a pressurised house supply, look at the SQE 5-35 or above. The pump comes with a 1.5 m motor lead, so you’ll need 3-core drop cable and a cable joint kit.

Grundfos SQE 5-15 overview

The SQE 5-15 is the single-stage model in the Grundfos SQE 5 family. It is built to move a lot of water a short distance: 5 m³/h at 11 m, and up to 6 m³/h at lower heads. It is the right pump when the water is close to the surface and the job is volume rather than pressure. Typical uses are shallow wells and boreholes, filling storage or header tanks, garden and paddock irrigation, pond and lake abstraction, and water transfer.

It uses the same pump end as the SQ 5-15, fitted with Grundfos’ MSE3 variable-speed motor. It runs at fixed speed like a standard SQ, switched by a float switch, pressure switch or timer. It closes off at 18 m (1.8 bar), below the CU 301‘s lowest 2 bar set point, so it isn’t suited to constant-pressure use.

These figures are at full speed. Head is the total lift the pump has to provide: the depth to the pumping water level, plus the height to the outlet, plus pipe losses, plus any pressure you want (about 10 m for each bar).

Worked example: filling a storage tank from a shallow well. A pumping water level of 4 m, plus a 2 m rise to the tank inlet, plus about 2 m of pipe losses, gives 8 m. The SQE 5-15 delivers roughly 5.5 m³/h there, which fills a 1,000-litre tank in about 11 minutes. If you need more lift, the SQE 5-25 gives 5 m³/h at 23 m.

Key features

High flow, low head

A single large stage moves up to 100 litres/min at low head. That is ideal for irrigation, tank filling and transfer where volume matters more than pressure.

Permanent-magnet motor

The MSE3 permanent-magnet motor is compact and efficient, with its protection electronics built in, so no separate control box is needed down the well or at the surface.

Dry-running protection

The motor monitors its own power draw. It cuts out if the well runs dry and restarts automatically once the water recovers, which protects the pump on shallow, fast-drawing sources.

Soft start and voltage protection

A smooth ramp-up keeps start current low and reduces water hammer. Over- and under-voltage protection stops the motor below 150V or above 315V before it can burn out.

Built for real boreholes

Floating impellers with tungsten carbide/ceramic bearings tolerate up to 50 g/m³ of sand. A spring-loaded non-return valve is built into the top of the pump.

Stainless steel construction

The pump sleeve and motor are EN 1.4301 (AISI 304) stainless steel, with glass-reinforced polyamide hydraulics, for a long life in clean water (pH 5–9).

Installation notes

Hang the pump below the lowest expected pumping water level. It must be fully submerged before it is switched on.
Use 3-core submersible drop cable, because Grundfos SQ/SQE motors don’t take 4-core. Join it to the motor lead with a heat-shrink cable joint kit.
Use 1½” pipework to match the Rp 1½ outlet. Smaller pipe adds losses that this low-head pump can’t afford.
Don’t pair it with a CU 301 for constant pressure: it closes off at 18 m (1.8 bar), below the CU 301’s 2 bar minimum set point.
At 5 m³/h it can draw down a small or slow well quickly, so check your yield first. The dry-running protection will stop it if the well empties.

Don’t need variable speed? The Grundfos SQ 5-15 (96510211) uses the same pump end with a fixed-speed MS3 motor and runs from a float switch, pressure switch or timer.

How much water does the Grundfos SQE 5-15 pump?

At full speed it delivers about 5 m³/h (83 litres/min) at 11 m of total head, and up to 100 litres/min at 7 m. Delivery stops at 18 m.

What’s the difference between the SQE 5-15 and SQ 5-15?

They have the same pump end, performance and borehole fit. The SQE has the MSE3 variable-speed motor and the SQ is fixed-speed. On this low-head model both do the same job, so the SQ is usually the better-value choice.

Can it supply my house at mains pressure?

No. It closes off at 1.8 bar, so it can’t deliver 2–3 bar at the taps, and it’s below the CU 301’s 2 bar minimum set point. For a pressurised house supply, choose the SQE 5-35 or higher with a CU 301.

Will the SQE 5-15 fit my borehole?

Yes, if the borehole, well or liner has an internal diameter of at least 76 mm (3″). It also fits in larger wells and sumps.

What happens if my well runs dry?

The SQE senses the drop in power when there is no water, stops itself and restarts automatically once the water recovers.

What cable does it need?

A 3-core submersible drop cable (live, neutral, earth) from the 1.5 m motor lead to the surface, joined with a heat-shrink joint kit. At 5.2 A, 1.5 mm² is usually fine on short runs. We’ll confirm the size for your length.
