It’s happened to all of us. You jump in the shower on a cold winter’s morning and then freeze while you wait for the hot water to arrive. You could run the shower before you jump in, but imagine the thousands of gallons going straight down the drain over the course of a year. There is a solution, however, and it’s called a circulating pump.

So how do circulating pumps work?

In a traditional hot water system, once you switch off the tap, the water simply stays in the pipes and begins to cool. The next time you use your tap or shower, you’ll need to wait while the cold water flushes through. A circulating pump solves the problem by constantly circulating hot water through your system. Every time you switch on the shower you’ll have piping hot water immediately.

Hot water on demand?

Sound great! It’s not just the convenience of hot water on demand. You’ll save a significant amount of water wastage, and that’s important if your supply is metered.

Circulating pumps are robust and easy to install and use, but we’d recommend buying at the top end of your budget to guarantee energy savings and reliability.

The best thing is that circulating pumps are easy to retrofit to your existing hot water system, so you can still enjoy all the benefits, however old your system is. A competent DIYer can tackle the job, but if you’d prefer a professional installation, we can ensure that your pump runs at maximum efficiency.

Is there a catch?

Not really. Because circulating pumps deliver hot water on demand, and are engineered for maximum energy efficiency, you won’t be wasting energy pumping water around the system unnecessarily. However, there can be heat loss from your hot water pipes, but by insulating you’ll keep that to a minimum.

Wait – I use solar

The good news is, circulating pumps work with solar water heating systems by pumping water to the solar collector for heating.
