Many people dream of living off-the-grid. Getting away from the stresses of modern life and reclaiming independence is a surprisingly common aspiration, especially in the more rural areas of East Anglia. If you yearn to live off-grid, however, you’re going to face a number of substantial challenges. One of the most significant challenges that you’ll have to deal with is sourcing safe, clean water.

Living off-grid obviously involves detaching yourself from modern infrastructure, which means you won’t be able to just turn on a tap and get water instantly. Luckily, there are pieces of equipment that can help you obtain water from your natural environment. We’ll discuss how you can deploy them in today’s blog.

1. A water pump

Water pumps are among the most important pieces of apparatus for anyone who wants to live off-grid. They enable you to quickly get water from rivers, aquifers and other natural sources without having to rely on your local water supplier.

When you choose a site to start your life away from it all, remember to choose somewhere with access to relatively clean flowing water. It’s also important to note that the water you pump from a natural source can be used for irrigation and garden-related tasks, but you shouldn’t attempt to drink it or wash in it. We supply a range of pumps that can be used for sourcing water in various ways such as well pumps, submersible pumps, borehole pumps, self-priming pumps, centrifugal pumps and peripheral pumps.

2. A water filtration system

Water filtration systems can make water that you obtain from a natural source considerably cleaner. You may even be able to use it to clean outside structures. However, we still wouldn’t recommend washing in it or drinking it.

3. Water purification tablets other purification options

Here at Anglian Pumping Services, we can supply you with both water pumps and filtration systems. However, you’ll still need to invest in additional purification measures. There are products available that can make naturally sourced water drinkable and clean enough to wash with. We suggest that you research and invest heavily in these products before completely going off-grid.

4. A power supply

Your water pump and filtration system will both need a reliable power supply. As you’d expect with a completely independant off-grid lifestyle, this means you won’t have access to the national electrical grid, so you’ll need to invest in a renewable power supply (such as solar panels or a wind turbine) or a petrol-powered generator.

Bear in mind, however, that water and electricity don’t mix. Be very careful when connecting a water pump or filtration system to any unconventional power supply.

We offer a very broad range of water pumps and filtration systems here at Anglian Pumping Services, so make us your first port of call if you plan on living off-grid.
