Garden water supply should always come from an external tap – you don’t want hoses trailing through your house just in case joins come loose.
You may want to increase pressure or capacity for sprinkler or irrigation purposes.
Most garden taps are connected directly to the mains so pressure is good.
If you need more pressure you can add a pump but this must be done from a tank as boosting mains pressure directly is not permitted under UK bye-laws.
A pump can be added to a suitable tank storing mains water or collected rainwater for use in the garden but additional pump filtering may be required when using rainwater.
If your watering needs are more extensive, for example for small-scale farming, livestock or other light commercial uses, a borehole may be the solution. By tapping into naturally filtered groundwater it is possible to bypass the mains supply entirely reducing costs over the long term. See the Wells and boreholes page for more information.
